Wage deductions are only permitted under narrowly-defined circumstances

This week's video series goes over wage deductionsspecifically, the limits imposed by the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and the common law. The topics covered this week were:

  1. prohibited deductions for cash shortages or lost or stolen property (this includes dine-and-dash and gas-and-dash);

  2. prohibited deductions for faulty work (but the availability of a civil remedy for the employer);

  3. the requirements of a written agreement to a wage deduction (e.g. for training repayment); and

  4. the common mistakes that will cause a repayment agreement to be tossed by the courts.

You can find more details on each of these points in the descriptions attached to these videos. They also include examples of unilateral deductions that are permitted by legislation.

Next week, I'm turning to pay transparency.

Have a lovely long weekend, all!
