Flat fees. No billable hours.

Sliding scale options, because I care about accessibility.

And personalized coaching for anyone ready to negotiate with confidence. â€‹

WHY BOTHER?

Because the cost of signing without understanding the fine print is bigger than most people realize.

$1 million over

your career

One widely cited study found that failing to negotiate your starting salary can cost you over $1 million in lost earnings over your lifetime.

And that doesn’t even include the value buried in other clauses—like limited bonuses, strict probationary periods, sweeping non-compete agreements, or weak termination entitlements.

know what to ask and

when to walk away

Not everything is negotiable. But when you understand what you're signing, you're in a better position to ask the right questions—or walk away from a job that may not align with your goals.

find a job that will bring you career

satisfaction

This isn’t just about negotiating harder. It’s about going into your next role with your eyes open, knowing what matters to you, and making confident, informed decisions about your work and your future.

Want a preview of what I’m like to work with?

I post free videos on YouTube and Instagram where I walk through real contract issues in plain language.
They’ll give you a feel for my tone, approach, and commitment to keeping this process accessible—no jargon, no judgment.

ABOUT

Hi, I’m Rika — an employment lawyer, gender equity consultant, and biracial Japanese-Canadian feminist building a legal practice grounded in fairness and inclusion.

I’ve spent years helping employers understand their legal obligations to workers. Now, I’m using that insight to help individual employees navigate the same system—with clarity, confidence, and fairness.

Before starting Clausework, I worked in private practice at a

global firm, and as legal counsel at Ontario’s Ministry of Labour. I’ve supported clients across industries—from tech and banking to construction and education—and helped shape legislation, manage workplace disputes, and lead gender equity initiatives.

Clausework is the legal practice I’ve built around the values that matter most to me: accessibility, trust, and fairness — no matter who you are or where you work.

FAQ

?

1. I'm from outside Ontario. Can you still help me? Yes, I work with clients across Canada except in the Province of Quebec, which is a civil law jurisdiction.

2. What's a conflicts check? It’s a standard step (required by the Law Society of Ontario) to make sure I don’t already act for your employer or another related party in your situation. I’ll let you know right away if I spot any issues.

3. Can you review my contractor or current job agreement? Yes. Any package can be adapted for independent contractors or current employees. I’ll help you understand your options and potential next steps.

4. Will negotiating hurt my chances? Not if it’s done thoughtfully. I’ll help you frame your ask in a way that’s respectful and constructive. Many employers expect it.

5. What if I can't afford your fees? If you're being offered less than a living wage, you could get the Reviewer package for free. This pro bono service is available to 5 clients each month — check the blog for availability. Otherwise, check out your local legal clinic directory and pro bono programs for free or reduced fee services.

6. How do I pay, and what happens to my information? You'll get an invoice after the service is complete. Payment is due within 30 days by e-transfer. I collect the minimum required information under Law Society rules, and I keep your data secure for the recommended retention period.
